Brazilian children involved in phone recycling projects
A pilot project of Umicore Brazil was set up in early 2007 to create more awareness about the possibilities of recycling. Pupils and teachers of the Albert Sabin School in Sao Paulo were invited to help with the Phone Recycling Project. As a result the participants collected hundreds of mobile phones and rechargeable batteries, ready for recycling.
Because of the huge success of the Phone Recycling Project, Umicore Brazil became even more ambitious. Supported by the government, a children’s book was published, explaining the process of recycling handsets and rechargeable batteries. Some 10,000 copies were distributed to schools in Americana, Guarulhos and Manaus.
Umicore Brazil began to study the possibilities of recycling in 2004 and strives to create more awareness about the subject. These projects turned out to be a big step in the right direction, as Umicore Brazil has received tons of recycling materials since the events.
